Why watch this film?

Sometimes it seems like romantic comedies in the style of Julia Roberts' My Best Friend's Wedding are a thing of the past. At best, they appear to reminisce about better times (like Ticket to Paradise or end up relegated to streaming. If you miss these movies made for the big screen, Anyone but You comes to the rescue. The story follows Bea (Sidney Sweeney, Euphoria) and Ben (Glenn Powell, Top Gun: Maverick), who have an excellent first date, but the spark between them suddenly fades. When fate brings them together at a wedding in Australia, they decide to pretend they are a couple. Neither Will Gluck's direction nor the screenplay are tremendously groundbreaking - you can see where everything is heading from miles away. However, Sweeney and Powell are very charismatic on screen, and their chemistry manages to carry the film through to the end. If you're looking for something with a bit more substance, check out Rye Lane. On the contrary, if you just want one of those romantic comedies without greater aspirations than narrating the encounters and bickering of two beautiful people, Anyone But You is for you.
