Why watch this film?
While the western is considered the quintessential American film genre, it's also true that its conventions have transcended those borders to tell universal stories about human struggles against nature (both environmental and human). The Promised Land would thus be a "Danish western". Set in the 18th century, the plot follows Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen, excellent as always), a retired captain from the German army of humble origin who intends to use his modest pension to tame the inhospitable moors of Jutland, Denmark, and build a settlement. However, this goes against the wishes of Frederich Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), a powerful but corrupt local magistrate and landowner. Thus, the story leads to a war of wills that escalates slowly but surely toward violence, but also to a struggle within Kahlen himself. While its narrative and visual aspects fail to stand out among other similar offerings, the direction is solid, the story is well-told, and the actors are phenomenal.

Plot summary
In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen sets out to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heath with a seemingly impossible goal: to build a colony in the name of the King. In exchange, he'll receive a desperately desired Royal name for himself. But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel, arrogantly believes this land belongs to him. When de Schinkel learns that the maid Ann Barbara and her servant husband have escaped for refuge with Kahlen, the privileged and spiteful ruler swears revenge, doing everything in his power to drive the captain away. Kahlen will not be intimated and takes up the unequal battle – not only risking his life, but also the family of outsiders that has formed around him.

The Dark Tower
The series of books 'The Dark Tower' is one of the most ambitious projects of writer Stephen King. After all, throughout eight books, the author talks about various relevant topics in a curious and provocative package that mixes fantasy, science fiction and magic. It is a deep and difficult work to decipher, full of metaphors and discussions that go beyond the pages of the books. Therefore, it is not surprising that this adaptation for the cinema, commanded by Nikolaj Arcel (from the great 'The Queen's Lover'), is so confused in several points. After all, the journey of the Gunslinger and the Man in Black cannot address all the central themes of the literary work in just 95 minutes, becoming saturated, confusing and somewhat tiring. However, even so, the production can be a good entertainment if it is dissociated from Stephen King's work, in addition to having good performances by Idris Elba ('Prometheus') and Matthew McConaughey ('Dallas Buyers Club'). It's not perfect, but it's a hint to delve into something bigger and better.

In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
