Why watch this film?

Frida is the directorial debut feature of Carla Gutiérrez, who has been an essential part as an editor of documentaries such as Chavela VargasRBG, and Julia, among others. Awarded at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival (on the 70th anniversary of the titular painter's death), this documentary builds its narrative from two fundamental elements of Frida Kahlo as an artist: the animation of her most iconic paintings with her own writings about her life, narrated by the voice of actress Fernanda Echevarría (and mixed with archival photographs). While the result may be somewhat didactic, it is also, unquestionably, one of the most authentic portraits of Frida Kahlo.
