Why watch this film?
After the tremendous and surprising success of 'Rocky: A Fighter', United Arts gave the green light for a sequel, released in theaters three years after the original feature. This time, Sylvester Stallone took on directing. The story deals with the aftermath of the first fight, in which boxer Apollo Creed (inspired by the legend Muhammad Ali) let himself be carried away by the party and won only by points - which leads him to propose a rematch and, this time, prepare and fight seriously. With a budget seven times higher than the first feature (but still modest for current times), the film knows how to mix very well the difficulties of the protagonist's life with the dilemmas of the athlete's career in another story of overcoming. Although it is not a brilliant production and has its problems, it knows very well how to explore and expand the events of the first part, as well as bring an exciting climax.

Rambo
After 20 years since the release of 'Rambo III', Sylvester Stallone returned to the iconic role of John Rambo once again - as well as sitting in the director's chair and signing the script. In the story, we find the former Vietnam veteran once again trying to lead a peaceful life in Thailand, but he ends up getting involved in a nearby conflict. Unequal and without the positive points of the first movie (the criticism of war and the way veterans are treated) and the second (the action in the 1980s style), 'Rambo' explores the excess of violence, which approaches gore - and which perfectly delivers what action fans "without limits" want to watch. The result is a feature film that displeased the critics, but that made a good part of the longtime fans happy.
Rocky III
With the second movie in the 'Rocky' series doing box office numbers close to the first, United Arts (now merged with MGM) approved a third feature for the franchise, once again directed by Sylvester Stallone. Now, the story switches the context from a failed man seeking glory to one who is a victim of his own success, stuck in a routine created only to keep him as the great champion, but without challenges. That is until the villain of the moment appears: Clubber Lang, played by Mr. T (who became famous in wrestling and in the series 'A-Team'). Now, Rocky turns to his former challenger, Apollo Creed, for help in training. 'Rocky III' is (very) far from the brilliance of the original movie, but has the merit of trying to innovate in the motivations of its protagonist. In addition, it introduces a new epic theme song: 'Eye of Tiger', a song by the band Survivor inspired by one of Creed's lines that became a huge success at the time, even reaching the position of boxing theme song on Rede Globo in the eras of Mike Tyson and Maguila.
Rocky IV
With the Cold War still in full swing, Sylvester Stallone used it as a backdrop for 'Rocky IV', a feature film produced, directed and starred in by himself. And this is the main mistake of the movie: it brings a Manichean view of the conflict, although it touches on two relevant themes: the false amateurism of Soviet athletes and the use of illegal substances by them. The villain of the moment is played by Dolph Lundgren, in his first leading role in Hollywood. Even with remarkable events to once again evoke overcoming (and which will be taken up again in 'Creed II'), 'Rocky IV' only recycles elements from the three previous films and adds nothing new. Still, it has the merit of continuing the evolution of the protagonist and works as an unpretentious fun for those who like the action fluff that were the 1980s. But, very far from the brilliance of 'Rocky: A Fighter'.
Rocky Balboa
With the trend of remakes and franchise revivals starting to dominate Hollywood, Sylvester Stallone pulled out his greatest creation. 'Rocky Balboa' brings back the retired title character with a restaurant in Philadelphia, but challenged to get back in the game by the current champion, Mason "The Line" Dixon, played by real-life boxer Antonio Tarver. The story, once again written and directed by Stallone, is practically a remake of 'Rocky: A Fighter', but it hits the mark by bringing nostalgia, facing aging body head on, and showing the repercussions of Rocky's life in previous years. With that, 'Rocky Balboa' was a success, revitalizing Sly's career and encouraging the return of the 'Rambo' franchise, the creation of 'The Mercenaries' and, later, the spin-off 'Creed: Born to Fight'.
The Expendables
'The Expendables' is the dream of anyone who lived through the action movies of the 1980s and 1990s. Co-writer, director, and star Sylvester Stallone called on other great stars of the genre from his era - such as Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis - to star in this violent, bloody, and brutal feature film. Forget the story: everything here is a pretext to bring these names together on screen, delivering action sequences that stir up nostalgia for those who followed them in their respective heydays. Note that part of the movie was filmed in Brazil, in addition to the presence of Mexican-Brazilian actress Giselle Itié.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.

After his release from a juvenile center, Wellington finds himself homeless in São Paulo. At a porn theater, he meets Ronaldo, who mentors him in street survival. Their bond evolves into a turbulent affair.
Cake
'Cake' takes us into the darkly funny world of Claire Bennett (Jennifer Aniston) who initiates a dubious relationship with a widower (Sam Worthington) while confronting fantastical hallucinations of his dead wife (Anna Kendrick). With her feisty housekeeper cum caretaker (Adriana Barraza) ever at her side, Claire searches for human connection and self-forgiveness in this tale of personal redemption.
