Why watch this film?
Since its first installment, the Evil Dead saga has been distinguished for existing between two worlds: cult following for its idiosyncratic creation under director Sam Raimi, and expansion towards a movie franchise that transcends original stories and characters. After the 2013 remake starring Jane Levy, Evil Dead Rise is another attempt to expand the franchise even though it actually takes many elements from the originals. The plot follows a woman, her sister, and her children who become trapped in their apartment after a blackout, while a horde of demons looms over them after finding a mysterious book. Even though it doesn't innovate much, the subtext about motherhood and family, the brilliant performances (Alyssa Sutherland is a delight), and solid direction and makeup make this a fun step in the right direction.
