Why watch this film?
If there is one French institution that stands the test of time, it's 'Asterix & Obelix.' Born in comic books in the 1950s, the story is inspired by the customs and culture of the Gallic people, with these two main characters as absolute protagonists, even going so far as to have television series and movies. This production, directed by actor Guillaume Canet (Blood Ties), picks up the story of the characters in 2023. As its name suggests, it tells of the "Middle Kingdom", telling the story of Emperor Han Xuandi's only daughter, who escapes from an evil prince and seeks help from the Gauls and the two brave warriors. Although ridiculously silly at times, Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom moves with the return of these characters and shows how, even almost 70 years later, there is still room for them in collective memory.

Little White Lies 2
Nine years after the dramedy 'Until Eternity', the sequel 'Nous finirons ensemble' resurfaces with the same positive points that made the first feature film a success. The cast continues to be the absolute highlight, with actors such as François Cluzet, Marion Cotillard, Gilles Lellouche and Jean Dujardin. And the plot also remains flavorful: with dilemmas of everyday life, it shows the midlife crisis of one of the characters, who tries to make a reunion of old friends. There are no great reinventions in 'Nous finirons ensemble', which has the face of contemporary French cinema. But perhaps for this reason, it is good to watch. It shows life as it is. Without filters and with a pinch of comedy.
Blood Ties
Directed by French actor and filmmaker Guillaume Canet ('Love Me If You Dare'), 'Blood Ties' is a remake of the film 'Les Liens du Sang', by Jacques Maillot. This, in turn, is an adaptation of the novel 'Deux frères: flic & truand', by Bruno and Michel Papet. Although technically very well realized as a period crime drama (set in the 1970s), the script wanders between various stories about violence and betrayal (in a tradition similar to Martin Scorsese's), but its quality of acting by many is undeniable. Actors such as Clive Owen ('Children of Men'), Billy Crudup ('Public Enemies'), Marion Cotillard ('Inception'), Matthias Schoenaerts ('Rust and Bone'), Mila Kunis ('Black Swan') and Zoe Saldana ('Avatar'), along with the legendary James Caan ('The Godfather'), help take this action-packed feature to another level of appreciation.

The Book of Clarence
Biblical epics in the style of Ben-Hur are so recognizable in classic cinema that they have been the subject of witty parodies (most notably, the also classic Monty Python's Life of Brian). Here, director Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) filters the conventions of these films through a black lens, with a cast led by names like Lakeith Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, and Anna Diop, among others. The Book of Clarence follows a man who, aspiring to be someone in life, decides to capitalize on the popularity of Jesus of Nazareth for his own benefit. Through the biblical cliché, the film examines issues such as black identity, the distortion of faith by organized religions, and the very sense of goodness and compassion. It's somewhat uneven but nonetheless entertaining.

Richard: The Stork
A charming animation full of adventure and vibrant colors in a story about leadership and maturity. The film tells the story of Richard, a brave sparrow adopted by a family of storks, and his journey to find a lost jewel while leading a group of oppressed birds. The sequel maintains the essence of the original, while exploring themes of friendship and self-knowledge, with valuable lessons reminiscent of Disney classics.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
The third official installment in the Ghostbusters saga, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was a sequel that worked due to its nostalgic and self-referential spirit: it acknowledged the passage of time and the separation of the original group (in front of and behind the cameras), paying homage and passing the torch to a new generation. The sequel seems to throw all that out the window. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire continues the story of Phoebe Spengler (Mckenna Grace) and her family as the new Ghostbusters, back in New York to fight the paranormal. However, gradually, subplots involving new characters (Kumail Nanjiani is one of the best) as well as others already introduced in the new generation begin to emerge, but there's also a return of almost all the classic characters. The result is an unnecessarily complicated web of subplots and an overload of characters, which ends up diluting the impact of the film's most fun and emotional ideas. It's not a disaster, but it definitely would have worked better if it had embraced the innovative spirit of its predecessor to let go of the past.
