Why watch this film?
MaXXXine is the conclusion of director Ti West's X Trilogy, starring Mia Goth. The story continues in 1985, six years after the events of X, with Maxine Minx now a star in the adult film industry, trying to transition to "mainstream" cinema. Simultaneously, a figure who knows about her dark past tries to blackmail her and thwart her plans, while a serial killer is loose in Hollywood, claiming the lives of several sex workers and actresses at the height of the "Satanic Panic" of the Reagan era. With vast references to film history, the third movie in the trilogy successfully grounds themes introduced in X and its prequel, Pearl: together, the three parts form a triptych that analyzes the moral schizophrenia of American society and culture, with female fame existing in the constant tension between prudish conservatism and misogynistic exploitation.

Pearl
After paying tribute to slasher horror in the acclaimed X, filmmaker Ti West now travels to the late 1910s to tell the origin story of Pearl, the killer from the first movie, once again portrayed by the brilliant Mia Goth (Suspiria). In this film (the second part of his X Trilogy), we follow the story of this young woman who can no longer take living on a remote farm with her abusive mother and vegetative father. Between comings and goings, mistakes and successes, Pearl finally has a breakdown because she can't take it anymore, she wants a change and is always ignored. It is a much more mature production than the previous film, both in terms of direction and script, as it knows how to develop its characters and, above all, create a climate of tension even with absurdly colorful and sunny scenes, with cinematography reminiscent of technicolor films like The Wizard of Oz. Again, it's worth highlighting the impactful performance by Goth, overlooked at the 2023 Oscars, who makes the most of her potential. It's no coincidence that even filmmaker Martin Scorsese praised the film and the performance.

X
Directed by Ti West (The House of the Devil, In a Valley of Violence), X is a film that draws inspiration from old slashers and 70s independent cinema, paying homage to them. Along lines reminiscent to the classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the film follows a group of young people in the late 70s who travel to a remote Texas farm with plans of making a porn movie. Naturally, things go wrong when the owners of the place, an elderly couple, discover their plans. West aims to make a horror film with somewhat elevated concepts about voyeurism and the male gaze. He doesn't always succeed, but even without that, it's a satisfying traditional horror proposition, which has also given rise to a very interesting trilogy on the subject: the prequel Pearl and the sequel MaXXXine, all starring Mia Goth.
