The acclaimed Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul's ('Tropical Malady', 'Cemetery of Splendor') short film, 'Blue', originally created for the Paris Opera's '3e Scène' collection, is more akin to a filmed performance than a short film, as it boldly breaks away from the artifacts that give life to cinema, in a dreamlike experience where cinematic and theatrical artifacts coexist. An experience of only 12 minutes, but one that both novice cinephiles and avid Weerasethakul fans alike will surely be deciphering for much longer afterwards.
Memoria
If this is your first time encountering the work of Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, know that you're in for a treat. Despite its slow pace, the story, which diverges between fantasy, science fiction and thriller, manages to be quite intriguing. Tilda Swinton as the protagonist is of utmost importance: the doubts of the character are not only the driving force of the narrative, but also the attention of the viewer. In the plot, Jessica (Swinton) hears a loud noise in the middle of the night and becomes obsessed with finding out what it is. The movie eventually turns into a journey of self-discovery as Jessica goes after the source of the mysterious sound that has been keeping her up at night. The ending of 'Memoria' is undoubtedly surprising and worth all the effort that the film forces you to have.

In Kidnapped (Rapito), Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio delves into one of the murkiest and most controversial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church, the "Mortara case". In 1851, when Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara becomes gravely ill, his Catholic nanny decides to baptize him in an emergency. However, papal law dictates that all Catholics must be raised as such, so the cardinal orders the boy to be taken and handed over to the church, against his parents' wishes, who decide to fight for him. The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.
