Why watch this film?
'Hostiles' marks Christian Bale's return to westerns, which he shone in with 'The Outlaw Josey Wales'. Here he plays a legendary Army officer who must escort a group of people with their own issues across the harsh Old West. The result is a chaotic, brutal, and gritty film, as a good western should be – though with dialogue that could have used some polish.

Black Mass
When it comes to movies about gangsters and other real-life decadent criminals, the obligatory reference is Martin Scorsese, with films like 'Goodfellas' or even 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. However, 'Black Mass' is a great addition to this select list, with a script based on the book 'Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance between the FBI and the Irish Mob' written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill, about the gangster reign of the infamous James "Whitey" Bulger. Obviously, the main attraction is - questionable makeup aside - Johnny Depp's brutal performance, in one of his most shocking and underrated roles of his career. However, there's a lot to see here, from a well-told police drama to a fabulous cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Corey Stoll and Jesse Plemons.

Antlers
"Antlers" is a movie where the horror element serves as a vehicle to discuss two distinct themes. The first is trauma, expressed through its main character, the teacher played by Keri Russell ("Planet of the Apes: The Confrontation"), who sees in her student traces of abuse and neglect that remind her of her own dark past. The second theme is local folk mythology - the feature film explores the Wendigo, a supernatural creature of the forests of northern United States and Canada, a wild spirit that originates from explorers lost in the forest who have renounced their own humanity. The narrative prevents the film from exploring the full potential of its themes, but it must be noted the quality of the atmosphere that offers a deep immersion, as well as the special effects, which deliver a terrifying creature and reveal it little by little to maintain suspense around its figure. The performances are also excellent, with a highlight for the young actor Jeremy Thomas. It is a very well constructed and interesting horror movie, although there was room to shine even more.

The Pale Blue Eye
Directed by Scott Cooper ("Dark Waters"), "The Pale Blue Eye" is a period thriller with elements of horror, exclusive to Netflix, based on Louis Bayard's homonymous novel. The plot follows a weary detective (Christian Bale) who must investigate a gruesome crime at a military academy: a cadet was found hanged with his heart removed. To solve the mystery, he counts on another recruit, who turns out to be none other than a young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling, known as Dudley in the Harry Potter films). The pace of the film is uneven, partly due to a strict fidelity to the novel. However, the performances are wonderful (with other big names such as Gillian Anderson, Toby Jones and Lucy Boynton), and director Scott Cooper manages to create a sinister and intriguing atmosphere that does not leave us throughout the movie.

The Settlers
The Settlers (Los colonos), directed by Felipe Gálvez, is a Chilean film that appropriates the conventions of the revisionist western to explore a often marginalized side of Chile's colonialist history. The plot revolves around a landowner who hires an expedition to demarcate his property and open a path through Patagonia to the Atlantic Ocean. Who makes up the expedition? A young Chilean mestizo, an American mercenary, and an English lieutenant—a uneasy mix that generates tensions. Although scattered in tone and narrative, The Settlers is visually impressive and serves as a good starting point if you want to learn more about European colonization in Latin America, the repercussions of which are still felt today.

Dead for a Dollar
Directed by veteran of the Western and action cinema, Walter Hill (Revenge, Deadwood), Dead for a Dollar (Muerto por un dólar) is an austere and classic Western in its narrative. The story follows a bounty hunter veteran who must cross into Mexico to save the wife of a millionaire, but soon discovers that she is actually running from him and he must decide whether to protect her or return her. At times the budget shortages are noticeable, but its narrative explores a historically ungenerous era –and genre– with women and people of color. That, plus good performances by Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Christoph Watz (Inglourious Basterds) make it worth a chance.

Old Henry
It is one of the few films that can even interest those who don't like westerns. Starring Tim Blake Nelson, it was nominated for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival and has been a worldwide success due to its great ability to keep us intrigued with the story of 'Old Henry'.

Never Grow Old
"Never Grow Old" is an Irish Western starring Emile Hirsch ("Into the Wild") and John Cusack ("Being John Malkovich") as the antagonist. The film follows Emile's character, a funeral director living in a peaceful, vice-free town whose peace is disturbed by the arrival of a stranger bringing alcohol, cards, and women. The vices destabilize the town, and though the activity proves lucrative for the funeral home, he realizes that the situation could put his family in danger. The film is slow and immersive, building up a lot of tension as it unfolds. The characters present a complex morality that cannot be easily defined as good or bad, and the performances of both protagonists carry the movie. It is a modern Western in all its implications, seeking ways to rekindle the genre and develop new conflicts.
